Is Hunting Reaching More Women Today?
Hunting has historically been a male dominated activity. In ancient times, it was the men who did the hunting while women were relegated to more passive roles like rearing the young and picking fruit. Even in modern times, where hunting has become a favorite pastime for some, it still remains an activity that only men would normally take up. However, in recent years, the number of women taking up hunting is slowly on the incline.
While most women only get involved with hunting when accompanied and guided by a male companion, others are becoming more independent and doing it on their own. They are being much more active participants, rather than just merely tagging along. While most women tend to hunt for smaller game such as quails, rabbits, and fowl, others are taking it beyond and setting their sights on bigger game.
The times are changing as women begin to partake in what was formally a male dominated pastime. Women are beginning to realize they don’t need male assistance in handling a hunting rifle or bow. More women are beginning to orient themselves with outdoor and hunting basics. This also includes knowing how to safely handle firearms and how to properly handle and transport a carcass after a kill.
It is becoming more commonplace to see women toting a rifle and wearing camouflage. Women are becoming more versatile and are no longer letting history dictate to them what their role in society should be. More women are being featured in hunting magazines and being interviewed for their input on hunting shows. There are also hunting apparel now being designed specifically for women.
Whether a wife, mother, or daughter, women add a new dimension to the sport of hunting. This will only help the sport evolve in the years to come.
